Why today's battery reuse doesn't scale, and how every BalanceX BESS gives retired EV packs a second life.
The problem
Most retired EV packs are recycled despite years of usable life. Energy storage stays too expensive for most businesses, because today's reuse methods don't scale.

| TodayFull dismantling | TodayOEM-based reuse | BalanceXWhole-pack reuse | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Process | Pack taken apart and rebuilt module by module | Pack reused with the original manufacturer's system | Pack kept intact; BMS may be replaced in some instances |
| Battery reach | Any pack, but at high effort | Limited to specific models and OEM cooperation | Any brand, no manufacturer data needed |
| Cost | Labour-intensive; can exceed the battery's value in high-wage countries | Depends on OEM partnership terms | Low: no rebuild, no new enclosure |
| Aged cells | New enclosure and HV electronics added | Software not designed for aged batteries | Controls and AI built for second-life cells |
The solution
The pack, its modules and its high-voltage housing always stay intact. We keep the original Battery Management System when we can, and replace it with our own when we cannot.
Variant A
When the pack's own BMS is accessible and suitable, we keep it and connect the pack to our controls and energy management.
Variant B
When the original BMS is locked or unsuitable, we replace it with our OEM-agnostic BMS through a new harness. No manufacturer data needed.
Both variants
The pack links to a bidirectional inverter and becomes modular, retrofit-ready energy storage.
